In this case, Mr E was employed as an inspector for a vehicle management company in Liverpool. He had been employed for a lengthy period of time. When he reached the default retirement age his employment had then ceased. However subsequently he returned to work under a fixed term contract. Due to economic factors his employers had no option but to make redundancies. Very few employees wished to nominate themselves for voluntary redundancy. Mr E therefore decided to put himself forward.
